MIET and Zelenograd Nanotechnology Center will develop photonic integrated circuits
Moscow Photonics Cluster was established by the decision of Moscow Government. Different microelectronics enterprises that are residents of Technopolis Moscow (SEZ) have already become members of the cluster. Among them there are National Research University of Electronic Technology and Zelenograd Nanotechnology Center.
The new cluster unites enterprises and scientific and technical organizations working in the field of photonics with different specializations - from design to serial production. This should stimulate the development of the industry, provide it with additional support and, as a result, strengthen the technological sovereignty of the country.
Nowadays photonics is one of the most promising directions in the development of information technologies in the world. Photonic technologies make it possible to increase the speed of data processing and transmission by 50-100 times. They are already being used in mobile phones, computers, and LED lighting fixtures.
The idea of the cluster is to implement the entire chain for the development of photonics devices. MIET will act as a scientific center, its efforts are focused on studying the fundamentals of photonics technologies, both active and passive. Zelenograd Nanotechnology Center together with MIET has already been developing elements of passive photonics: multiplexers, splitters based on silicon, silicon-on-insulator and other promising materials.
MIET conducts researches in this field within the framework of the Priority 2030 program. The university scientists are working on the development of energy-independent photonic elements for fully optical neuromorphic computing systems. Moreover, the highly sensitive photon detectors have already been manufactured and the specialists are now studying the technology of femtosecond lasers. This year at the Photonics-2022 exhibition MIET also presented a laser device for the restoration of biological tissues.
Zelenograd Nanotechnology Center and Scientific-Manufacturing Complex "Technological Centre" design the photonic integrated circuits for practical use. Zelenograd Nanotechnology Center modernized its production line and obtained the first samples of crystals of the domestic optical waveguide DWDM multiplexer. Next year it is planned to manufacture the developed passive photonic devices.
At the same time, Zelenograd Nanotechnology Center together with partners plans to start developing transceivers that are used in all fiber-optic lines when converting a light flux into an electrical signal with its digitization and transformation into an ordinary information stream.
In the future, Moscow Photonics Cluster will become the center of the ecosystem for the design, manufacture and implementation of photonic integrated circuits and include design centers, factories, test labs and enterprises.
