Russian companies start developing transceivers with photonic integrated circuits

Today photonics is one of the most popular and practical trends in data processing and transmission technology. Its implementation has already allowed to increase the speed of data exchange by 50-100 times. One of the most common photonics products attractive for mass production is a transceiver. They are used in all fiber-optic communication lines when converting light into an electrical signal, digitizing and turning it into a regular information stream.

Recently MIET has signed an agreement with three companies: Future Technologies – the largest Russian developer and manufacturer of transceivers, Ioffe Institute – a leader in the design and manufacture of lasers and Zelenograd Nanotechnology Center – the first domestic serial manufacturer of photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The organizations are jointly implementing a project for the development and manufacture of optical transceivers with PICs.

Parties contributions:

MIET – train specialized personnel and develop PIC design tools;

Zelenograd Nanotechnology Center – design, set up and test the technology for PICs manufacturing;

Future Technologies – develop technical specifications for PICs;

Ioffe Institute – develop new configurations of laser sources suitable for heterogeneous integration of PIC.

This kind of transceivers will reduce the cost of products, optimize the manufacturing process, help to achieve speeds of 1.6 Tbps and compete with the world's largest manufacturing companies.
