MIET annually organizes its own academic competition — Olympiad in Physics and Mathematics. The Olympiad is not just a nation-wide event, that takes place in region all across Russia, but students from the Commonwealth of Independent States can also take part in it. This year there were total of 7 foreign venues of the MIET Olympiad: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. 345 foreign students participated.

MIET regularly cooperates with The Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent State Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation, that is commonly known as Rossotrudnichestvo. The Olympiad took place at their centers in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus the Olympiad was held in local schools ­– partners of the university.
