MIET postgraduate is in the top 20 finalists of CodeRun
Victor Bordyuzha, a postgraduate student of the Higher Mathematics №1 chair, placed 18th among 959 participants of the Yandex competition CodeRun. The results are published on the official website. Victor talked about the competition and what the finalists could gain from it:
"Yandex held such a large-scale competition for the first time. There were 5 areas in total presented: machine learning, mobile development, back-end, front-end and data analytics. It was the longest competition of my life – 3 months. The job was very simple: to solve as many problems as possible. Each task belonged to one of three difficulty levels: simple, medium or complex. Points were given for solving the problem, while the "value" of the task changed depending on the number of participants who solved it.
It's not the first time I've participated in a Yandex competition, so some of the tasks were already familiar to me from their olympiad called "I'm a professional" (Я – профессионал). The importance of such competitions is not just to win, but to become better at what you do. The option to complete tasks after the competition has already ended helps. Before CodeRun, there was no possibility to test yourself at the tasks that could not be completed during the main challenge of the "I am a professional". CodeRun gave me an opportunity to take on even unresolved issues, and I took full advantage of it.
This competition is very different from a typical olympiad. Here we aren't going for a sprint, but rather for a marathon, it's a "long game". Initially, 29 tasks were available for the "Machine Learning" section, then they added 3 more tasks 2 weeks before the deadline. I managed to solve 31 out of 32. I did the tasks wherever I could: before and after candidate exams, during my vacation and after work. Some tasks I solved almost immediately, some required a couple of days, but one task took me about 10 days, when I tried to combine different approaches.
No one knows what the prizes will be, it will be revealed on July 21 at the awarding ceremony at the Yandex headquarters. But we know for sure that simplified interviews will be offered for the top 20 of each section. My final result is the 18th place out of 959 participants in the "Machine Learning" section".
Congratulations to Victor on his new achievement!
