MIET's students became winners in the International Translation Competition
Students of the Institute of Linguistic and Pedagogical Education Elizaveta Guseva and Denis Ermakov became winners of the Third International student competition of professionally oriented translation, dedicated to the International Translation Day. The competition is orginized by the Odintsovo branch of MGIMO University in partnership with Minsk State Linguistic University and the Association of Professional Translators and Translation Companies of Kazakhstan.
853 students from 120 universities of Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and China took part in the competition. They submitted 1246 different translations. The participants competed in professionally oriented translation from English, Spanish and Chinese.
MIET's students were among the best: Elizaveta Guseva received the second place in "Translation of management texts (from English to Russian)", and Denis Ermakov won the category of "Translation of economic texts (from English to Russian)".
4th year student Denis Ermakov commented on his participation:
"As part of the competition, we were offered small texts for translation on a wide range of topics: from economics and law to design and medicine. There were various difficulties in each of the texts.
Most of all I have remembered slogans in advertising and public relations texts, terminology related to aluminum production on an industrial scale, neologisms from the coronavirus pandemic era in the economical texts.
It was the category on economics that I managed to win. For anyone who wants to start participating in such competitions, I have a tip: just get started! There is nothing wrong with not taking the prize the first time. Treat those competitions as acting auditions: many theater and film stars get a dream role much later. Don't give up and believe in yourself. Participation itself provides an opportunity to get to know your strengths in a competitive environment and gives an incentive for further development. And if you win, you will also be able to apply for a higher scholarship and add another achievement to your academic portfolio and your resume. That is how you get closer to getting a dream job!"
