Cooperation in Microelectronics with TUSUR
A new format of collaboration is shaping among Russia’s leading universities, aimed at sharing expertise, identifying new cooperation opportunities and scaling best practices to achieve technological leadership. One of its key instruments is the industrial expeditions organised by the Center for Technological Leadership (Techlead Russia), which help universities explore each other’s strengths, build partnerships, and map the country’s science and technology competences.
On July 23, MIET hosted a visit as part of the industrial expedition programme. The event brought together representatives of Techlead Russia, Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR), as well as MIET’s senior management and specialists. Rather than promoting individual institutions, the format aims to create a guide to Russian universities and companies that are shaping the technological future.
The key outcome of the expedition was an agreement to develop a joint plan for cooperation in microelectronics, electronic components, CAD tools, design flows, MPW services, and workforce training for the electronics industry. However, the main goal of the expedition was not to sign formal agreements but to gain a first‑hand understanding of how the university’s competences actually work in practice.
During the visit, guests visited MIET’s research infrastructure and visited key laboratories, including the Research Laboratory for Nanoelectronics Component Base, the Research Laboratory for Active Photonics Materials and Devices, the Research Laboratory for Artificial Biomedical Regulation Systems, the Research Laboratory for Radar and Communications, the Photomask Center, and the International Scientific and Technological Center MIET.
Particular attention was paid not only to the research itself, but also to the surrounding ecosystem: how the university interacts with industry, how engineering teams are structured, and how scientific results are transformed into technological solutions for the real economy.
The visit programme included a meeting between MIET Rector Sergey Gavrilov, Techlead Russia CEO Irina Zhukova, and TUSUR Rector Viktor Rulevsky, where priority areas of cooperation were identified. The talks were also attended by TUSUR First Vice‑Rector Elena Kuzmina and Techlead Russia First Deputy Director Sergey Zverev. MIET Vice‑Rector for Research Alexey Dronov and Vice‑Rector for Innovative Development Alexey Pereverzev presented the university’s projects and infrastructure to the guests.
“Industrial expeditions allow to see a university not through presentations but through real technological processes. It’s crucial for us to understand the entire technology creation chain: from the laboratory and engineering team to the industrial partner and eventual deployment. Such practices help map the country’s technological competences and create new cooperations between universities and industry. MIET is a vivid example of an effective model: a whole ecosystem of high‑tech companies, research centres, and manufacturing facilities has formed around the university. Here, research doesn’t end with a publication, it turns into real products and technologies,” said CEO of Techlead Russia Irina Zhukova.
Following the meeting, TUSUR will prepare and send MIET a list of its own developments and educational challenges for expert review by the university’s relevant departments. This will be the next step in shaping the joint cooperation roadmap.
