SSEIT student develops laser processing technology

Margarita Petrova, a graduate student of Institute of Systems and Software Engineering and Information Technology, presented a development in the field of laser processing of materials. Her work, performed as part of her internship at Promis Lab, allows predicting the results of laser processing of almost any material with specified characteristics.

The development is based on a mathematical model that uses data scaling and multidimensional scaling techniques to construct input vectors and rank results. This model, verified in practice, formed the basis of an algorithm that can be used both to train a neural network and to predict the outcome of a process operation. A programme based on this algorithm has already been successfully used to predict the results of laser systems in the processing of stainless steel and other materials, including ceramics.

“The uniqueness of the development is that, given the availability of training data, it is possible to predict the result of any technological operation for any material with given parameters,” said Konstantin Nikolaev, a leading software engineer at Promis Lab, who is also a graduate student from SSEIT Institute. He emphasised that foreign analogues are often limited to two or three types of laser processing, which is not enough to reach full production capacity.

The development presented by Margarita Petrova is characterised not only by a wide range of predictable operations, but also by high speed of operation and minimal requirements for computing resources, which distinguishes it from expensive imported analogues. Margarita, being an employee of Promis Lab, notes that the introduction of the programme has increased the efficiency of research on laser installations by significantly reducing the number of iterations required to achieve the optimal processing mode.

This research has become a significant step forward in the field of laser technologies and may find wide application in industry.
